What to Expect During a Bathroom Renovation
What the weeks actually look like from inside the house, including the quiet week that worries people most.
Most of the anxiety in a renovation comes from not knowing what is normal. This is what the process looks like from the household’s side, including the parts that feel like something has gone wrong and have not.
Before anything starts
The useful work happens before the first day. Fixtures, tiles, screen, tapware and cabinetry are all selected and ordered so they are physically on site before demolition begins. This is the single biggest predictor of whether a job runs to program.
You will also be asked to clear the room completely and, if the bathroom is reached through a bedroom or a hallway with anything precious in it, to clear a path. Protection goes down over floors on the access route.
Week one is loud
Strip-out is the noisiest and most disruptive phase and it is over quickly. Tiles come off, linings come out, fixtures are removed, and a substantial volume of heavy rubble leaves the house.
Expect dust. Containment goes up at the doorway and it makes an enormous difference, but a bathroom demolition in a house is never a clean process, and anyone in the house who is sensitive to dust should plan around those days specifically.
This is also when the room is opened up for the first time and anything unexpected becomes visible. If there is something behind the wall, you will hear about it in this week, with what it means and what it costs, before it is covered over.
The middle is quiet, and that is correct
After rough-in the pace changes completely, and this is the part that unsettles people. Plumbing and electrical go in, the screed is laid to establish the falls, and then the waterproofing membrane is applied and has to cure.
For a stretch of days there will be nobody on site and nothing visibly happening. That is not a job being neglected. The room is drying, and it cannot be hurried without compromising the only part of a bathroom whose failure is genuinely expensive. If it is worrying you, ask, and you should get a straight answer about what is curing and until when.
Water, power and the toilet
At some point supply is isolated, and depending on the plumbing it may briefly affect more than the bathroom. You will be told before it happens and it is usually a matter of hours rather than days.
The toilet is out of service from strip-out until fit-off. If it is the only one in the house, that has to be planned for at quoting stage rather than discovered. Sometimes the sequence can be arranged to restore a working toilet earlier; it is worth asking.
Decisions you will still be asked to make
Even with everything ordered, a few things can only be settled in the room: exactly where the niche sits relative to the tile grid, the height of the shower rail and the mixer, which way the vanity drawers run, and where any future grab rail backing should go.
These are quick decisions but they are time-critical, because the wall is open for a limited window. Being reachable during rough-in week saves more time than anything else you can do.
Handover
At the end you should receive the waterproofing certificate and the documentation for the fixtures, and you should walk the room with whoever ran the job before anybody leaves. Anything you are not happy with is far easier to correct while the trades are still engaged than a fortnight later.
Silicone and grout need a short period before heavy use, and you will be told how long.
That is the whole shape of it. See full bathroom renovations for what the scope includes, or call 0468 047 067 to talk through your room.

A shower leak almost never shows up in the shower. Here is where it does show up, and what each sign means.
Ask us about your room
If the answer is that you do not need the work, or that a repair will do where somebody else quoted a rebuild, that is what you will be told.
- On site
- Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm
- Covering
- Cairns, the northern beaches to Palm Cove, south to Edmonton
- Quotes
- Measured in the room, given in writing, no obligation
- We look at the room before anyone talks about money, because a bathroom cannot be priced from a photograph
- The quote is itemised: what comes out, what goes back, and which fixtures sit at which tier
- You are left holding a written scope you can put beside somebody else's and actually compare
