A compact bathroom making full use of a tight footprint

A small bathroom is a different design problem to a large one, not a cheaper version of the same job. The trades cost roughly what they cost regardless of floor area, so the saving is smaller than people expect, and the constraint is not budget but geometry. What you are buying is somebody thinking hard about a room that is roughly two metres by two.

The fixed points decide everything

Every small bathroom has two or three things that are expensive to move and everything else arranges itself around them. The soil pipe for the toilet is the big one. On a slab it is set in concrete, and relocating it means cutting the slab, which is a real cost and sometimes a structural conversation. In a highset timber house it is usually accessible from below, which changes the answer completely.

So the first thing worth establishing is which of your constraints are real and which are just how the room happens to be laid out now. A great many small Cairns bathrooms were arranged around a bath nobody has used in a decade, and simply removing it releases the space that makes everything else possible.

What actually buys back floor area

A handful of decisions do most of the work, and they are worth spending on before anything decorative.

A wall-hung vanity reads as more floor because you can see the tiles running underneath it. A shower with no hob and no step, drained through a linear waste, removes the visual barrier that chops a small room in half. A cavity slider instead of a hinged door recovers the entire arc the door was sweeping, which in a two metre room is a significant fraction of the usable space. A recessed niche in the shower wall means no caddy hanging off the screen. A smaller basin, chosen deliberately, is almost always better than a standard one wedged in.

Mirrors help, but less than people hope. Light helps more, and in a room with no window that means getting the extraction and the lighting right rather than adding another downlight.

Tile format, honestly

The advice that small rooms need small tiles is wrong more often than it is right. Fewer grout lines make a small floor read as one continuous surface, and a large format tile with a tight joint usually looks bigger, not smaller. The real constraint is the fall to the waste: a floor has to slope, and a very large tile cannot follow a slope without lippage at the joints. That is why shower floors often step down to a smaller format or a mosaic while the main floor stays large.

There is also a maintenance argument up here. Fewer grout joints means less grout to discolour in a humid room, which matters more in Cairns than it does further south.

What we will tell you

If the thing you want will not fit, you will hear it at the quote rather than after the strip-out. A bath and a separate shower in a two by two room is the most common example, and the honest answer is usually that you can have one of them properly or both of them badly.

Send the room’s dimensions and a photo through the form, or call 0468 047 067, and we will tell you what the space can realistically do.

Questions about small bathroom renovations

Can you move the shower and toilet, or do they have to stay where they are?

It depends on your floor. In a highset timber house the drainage is reachable from the subfloor, so moving a fixture is far more affordable than most people assume. On a concrete slab it means cutting and reinstating concrete, which is a real cost and sometimes not worth it in a room whose layout is already sensible. We will tell you which of the two you have before you commit to a new layout.

Measured in the room, given in writing, no obligation
  • We look at the room before anyone talks about money, because a bathroom cannot be priced from a photograph
